My son is ten and weighs 130 lbs. he was prescribed amoxicillin 400 mg/5 ml suspension. 2 1/2 teaspoons once daily. is this the correct dosage?

No: The standard dose of Amoxicillin is 25-50 mg/kg/24 hours divided into three (every 8 hours) or 2 (every 12 hours) doses per day. Your child is getting 1000 mg once a day. He should be getting between 800 and 1600 mg per dose twice a day. Perhaps the physician meant to write for 1,000 mg twice a day and the RX was mistyped.

Hard to say: The dosing quantity & frequency in kids depends on weight & what it is being used for.Things like urinary tract suppressive meds for a kid with recurrent UTI's might be 1X/d while a sinus infection would be 2-3X/d. This med is concentrated in urine, so this dose might be right for UTI suppression, but not anything else.When you submit a question it helps if you say what the med is for.

No: No, if this were BID ( twice daily dosing) then possibly yes, but we do not dose amoxicillin once daily except for UTI prophylaxis, as Dr Ferguson mentioned.

Incomplete question: Complete answer requires indication for antibiotic and anticipated duration of use. At least half of all antibiotic prescriptions are wrong and this looks like one of them.
