Yes &a yes: You can acquire Helicobacter pylori at any time though typically acquired early in childhood. Blood tests less helpful as once positive then tend to stay positive so not reliable for follow up of infection. Stool test for H. pylori antigen is very sensitive and specific. Breath test is also sensitive and specific but more involved and cannot be done if on antibiotics or acid blockers.
