MH Professionals: Several kinds of mental health professionals are trained to do psychotherapy: psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, counselors, psychiatric nurses & nurse practitioners, and some others. There are also various kinds of substance abuse counselors whose training may be specific for the groups they work with.

Look 4 Competence!: In states & provinces in which i've worked, anyone can call him/herself a "psychotherapist" or "talk therapist." so far, i haven't encountered a licensing body for "psychotherapists." that said, mental health & some health professionals are the ones who tend 2 get training. Look in2 the specific training different professionals get. Seek referrals from people u trust. Ensure u get competent help!

Different types: There are different types of therapists who do different types and amounts of psychotherapy. These would include psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, psychoanalysts and masters level therapists.
