Strength-based: "strength-based" describes the main focus of the psychotherapy. It attempts to create hope and change through focus on the person's strengths, as well as those of others. Many people overlook the positive characteristics they have, overemphasizing faults. "problems" are explored of course, but the focus is finding realistic, effective solutions and nurturing existing capacities for growth.

By comparison clinical psychologists work with patients either in the mental hospitals or with higher levels of pathology, and weaknesses are explored.
