You SHOULD take it: Folic acid is recommended for women contemplating pregnancy. The recommended dose for neural tube defect prevention in pregnancy is 400 micrograms, or 0.4 mg/milligrams daily. All women thinking of pregnancy should be taking this as part of their prenatal vitamin package. Of course, stop smoking, binge drinking, using illicit drugs. Healthy weight, regular exercise, be joyful and responsible.

Avoid birth defects: The use of folic acid in a prenatal vitamin is to avoid incomplete neural tube closure (spinal bifida ) which is an avoidable birth defect. Avoidance of alcohol, smoking, opioid abuse, and extreme physical sport activities in the last trimester are also recommended.
