Prevent birth defect: Eating Folic Acid or folate (folic acid) before/during early pregnancy dramatically prevents a group of serious birth defects called neural tube defects. It's most important in the first weeks of pregnancy ; since one often doesn't know they're pregnant until they miss their period, when they're already 2 weeks pregnant, it's crucial to have adequate folate (folic acid) before you know you're pregnant. Biotin helps too.
