how long before magnesium pills will work for constipation? i took 500mg this afternoon (6-7 hours ago) and no significant bowel movement so far.

Several days: 500 mg is not a huge dose. I would recommend 500 mg twice daily with plenty of water until you start having regular bowel movements, then cut back on the magnesium while maintaining the water intake.
