If one has HIV: In life, one cannot get something from nothing. Therefore, one person can catch HIV from another person only if the other person already has HIV. If a husband or a wife has HIV, then having sex can transmit the HIV from one person to the other person. This is one reason why all sexually active persons should be checked for HIV, so prevention or treatment can be started.
