Fat or overweight?: My daughter is 12 years old, 5 feet tall, and weighs a little over 100 pounds. Is she fat or overweight? If so, how can she lose some pounds? ANS: you did not give your ethnic background. But she is probably not overweight as BMI is 19.5 and overweight is ≥ 25. So ask your Dr to review her growth chart and discuss with her and with you.

She isn't overweight: Pediatric BMI is calculated by exact age (years and months), and overweight is not defined at 25 as it is in adults. Rather it is defined as 85-95th percentile of all girls of that age. At 12.5 years of age, the BMI of a girl at 5 ft tall and 100 lbs is 19.5, placing the BMI-for-age at the 64th percentile for girls. This is a healthy weight. Overweight is reached at a BMI-for-age of 85%.
