Xray usually done: Sometimes the doctor can just tell by looking, especially if there is a lot of displacement of the nose. However in most cases there is so much swelling an xray is needed to be sure.

If the fracture: Is displaced or angulated, a fracture can be discerned on exam. X-rays or CT may provide more details. If the fracture is nondisplaced or less severe, it may only be visible on X-rays.
