Avoid lifting: and avoid bending at the hip. If you have to pick something off the floor, bend at your knees, and keep your back straight. Other precautions include avoiding putting more wt on your body (i.e. back packs, heavy bags). Best treatment options are debatable based on who you consult (everyone has a different opinion). Severity and duration will factor in, but I will usually refer to a good PT 1st.

Sciatica: If the sciatica is caused by a bulging or ruptured disk, avoid putting much pressure on your spine by avoiding heavy lifting or prolonged standing, intensive coughing or severe straining for bowel movement. In my experience most cases improve without surgery by 6or8 weeks. Have you had an MRI to see what the pathology is? Have you seen a spine specialist for more advice?
