Evaluating the: IVC/inferior vena cava by ultrasound has become a tool to aid in assessment of the intravascular volume of a critically ill patient. The IVC is a thin-walled compliant vessel that adjusts to the body's fluid volume status by changing its diameter depending on total body fluid volume. When a person's intravascular volume is low, often in blood loss situations, the IVC collapses.
