Highly variable: The amount of sleep you need to perform at your best varies from person to person. Also, it's possible to "get away" with less sleep for shorter periods of time, but getting insufficient sleep has a cumulative negative effect. The amount needed varies from more than the average 8 hours to much less for a very few who have a different genetic requirement. Mid afternoon sleepiness is a good monitor.
