Painful sore throat: Maybe retro pharyngeal abscess if it is that painful that you can't swallow your saliva. You should be re-evaluated immediately!

Several: There are several things you can try. Honey is often soothing to the throat. Over the counter things you can try are chloraseptic spray and ibuprofen or tylenol. Throat lozenges sometimes help as well.
