Bleeding in gut: Black, tarry stools or melena is a sign of bleeding in the GI tract. This can occur anywhere from the mouth to the anus, but in patients with cirrhosis, the stomach and esophagus are primary sources. See your physician right away for further workup that may include blood work and upper/lower endoscopy.
