What are the specific benefits of having lumbar puncture under x-ray instead as opposed to the standard bedside way?

It depends...: Xray guidance usually isn't necessary for relatively slim persons with normal spines who are able to hold the proper position for 15-20 minutes. Xray guidance can be helpful otherwise, e.g. serious obesity or lower spine problems like arthritis or past injury or surgery. Discuss with the doctor or clinic where the LP will be done.
