Wait, or forego: The strength of the skin depends on how thick it was, and therefore, where. So, where were the stitches placed? Most skin sutures are removed after 2 weeks, but the skin is still only 80% of full strength. If you are not in a rush to get a tattoo I would wait a few more months - 72 hrs seems a little too rushed. But also, consider if you need the tattoo at all. (Sometimes it's best to leave it be)
