ESBL stands for extended spectrum beta-lactamase. It means the bacteria has an enzyme that makes it more difficult for antibiotics to kill the bacteria. The culture will show what antibiotics can be used to kill the bacteria that is ESBL positive, if treatment is needed. Sometimes, if the person with this isn’t sick, it is not necessary to treat this bacteria-that”s called colonization. Good luck!
