Complicated subject: Extended Spectrum Beta-lactamase producing bacteria are resistant to many of the commonly used antibiotics. Previously seen just in the hospital, these infections are now occurring in the general community. They can also colonize the intestines and reside there without causing symptoms...but this is a likely source of reinfection. The infection can be cured, but may be resistant to cure in some

Esbl: There are a limited number of oral and intravenous antibiotics that are effective against these bacteria. The key is quick diagnosis so that any ineffective antibiotic treatment is stopped immediately. It is very important that the right antibiotics are prescribed at the correct dose for the appropriate length of time and only when required. It is difficult to treat but is treatable .
