Drug resistant bug: Extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (esbl)--producing escherichia coli are more dangerous than other e coli and cause more serious infections.

ESBL stands for...: Extended spectrum beta-lactamase and organisms that produce it are more resistant to antimicrobials but do not necessarily produce more serious infections. However, since these bugs tend to be acquired in hospitals (but not always), the people who get them are likely more debilitated. We do have antimicrobials like the carbapenem class to treat them but there are bacteria that are resistant too.
