ESBL: So extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) bacteria have special chemicals made only by these specific bacteria that break down certain kinds of antibiotics, making the infection with these bacteria much harder to treat with typical antibiotics or more than just one typie. We often have to isolate these patients in the hospital to make sure the bacteria does not spread as it can do so easily.
