Jaw pain: It is common to have your jaw open wide for an extended period during a root canal procedure and this can cause some jaw pain. This is typically strained muscles and OTC ibuprofen, soft diet, and the recommended jaw exercise will help you feel better while the muscles heal. Follow up with your dentist if this does not feel better.

Normal: The jaw and tooth can be sore following a root canal for several days. The tooth has been traumatized so there is an inflammatory response. Also jaw had to be opened wide and for extended time so muscles and joint strained. Your dentist wants you to care for your strained jaw with exercise, ice and heat, soft diet and controlled opening. Use ibuprofen every 4-6 hours for pain and reduce soreness.
