Depends: Very brief pains unrelated to swallowing or talking, especially on the order of seconds, is hard to determine. If it happens with speech or swallowing might be throat ulcer. If it goes to ear with swallowing then ulcer, tumor, or irritation of the glossopharyngeal nerve. If persists more than 2-3 weeks then see ent.
