Fat padding in feet: The fat pad doesn't exactly "wear" away. But fat padding associated with weight bearing surfaces does tend to decrease with age. The palmar/plantar skin tends to thin away as well. Boney prominences and arthritic Exostosis tend to increase with age. So all this factors can contribute to more pain. However your specific "big toe pain" should be evaluated and xrayed. "gel insoles" could help.
