See answer: Generalized itching without a rash can be: psychiatric in origin, due to dry skin(Xerosis) in aging, due to a systemic disorder or side effect of medication. Often times the history and exam will suggest the cause. In cases where the cause isn't obvious a laboratory screen is indicated along with a trial of anti-itch medication. If the itching is persistent more in depth evaluation is needed.
