Many causes: Eyes can be red from infection, allergies, internal inflammation and trauma. If your vision is disturbed, if there is pus, or if there is pain and light sensitivity, then you need to see an ophthalmologist to sort this out and administer the proper treatment.

Lubricate!: You can try lubricating the eyes with artificial tears one drop 3-4 times a day and taking oral omega 3's like evoa dry eye supplements to stimulate more and better tear production. This will work if they are red due to dryness. Some people just do not have as white as eyes as others. For one time (urgently) you can use visine get the red out. Visine is not healthy for chronic long term help.

Should not: If you eyes are red you should see an ophthalmologist. You should not put any makeup until seen. Makeup can make some conditions like corneal ulcers worse.
