Depends: Most puncture wounds can harbor servere infection. All humans and cats puncture wounds do require antibiotic prophylaxis. After thorough irrigation and wound debridement .In dogs depends if patient is immunocompromised, and if wound is on hands , feet, face. Dog bite from unknown dog , deep and as above locations after irrigation and provide cleanse require prophylactic antibiotic and Td shot.

STD OF CARE: A literature review, admittedly 15 years old, felt there was not enough evidence to use prophylaxis. But, what's the "standard of care" in your community? Most probably use antibiotics; a beta lactamase inhibitor is the DOC.

I would use: Antibiotic! Augmentin is the drug of choice. Better to prevent than treat later!
