A member asked:

I think i'm having a contact dermatitis reaction from a new lotion? can i take benadryl (diphenhydramine) for the itching on my arms and will it help make it go away

Contact dermatitis: Contact dermatitis is an allergic reaction but not the type that involves histamine. Benadryl (diphenhydramine) is an antihistamine and treats allergic reactions that have a histamine release, such as hives. Allergic contact dermatitis is most commonly treated with cortisone creams. Because Benadryl (diphenhydramine) makes you sleepy, it may seem to relieve itch during the night, but it does not treat contact dermatitis.

Yes: Benadryl (diphenhydramine) might be helpful for controlling the itching but it probably won't take the rash away. You should discontinue the lotion and see what happens. If the rash persists, you should see a dermatologist.

Cortisone creams: While Benadryl (diphenhydramine) might provide some anti- itch relief, topical cortisone creams will often time give a better result. Of course, discontinuing the lotion is an important first step.
