Cracking sounds: are typically from a ligament, tendon or bone injury. If there is pain associated I would definitely get an xray to rule out a fracture!

Stop pulling...: Just a little more clarity is needed. When you pull down on it, where exactly does it hurt? Exactly what are you pulling down on? Is the pain more on the foot or on the outside of the ankle? Is there any swelling or bruising.? It sounds as though a ligament was sprained or bone was cracked. Follow up with a Healthtap doctor or your own for resolution,
