Tonsillitis : If no strep , usually no need for antibiotics. He could have allergy induced problem so try Benadryl (diphenhydramine) at night . Talk to pharmacist for dosage.

Sounds like the: doctor feels this is viral, in which case no antibiotics are necessary.Most throat infections are viral. Usually they are treated with antibiotics only if the strep test is positive or there is a tonsillar abscess.If your son has recurrent infections, I would discuss the possibility of seeing an ear, nose and throat specialist. For now, as he seems well in every other way,you can probably observe.
