My first thought: is nerve compression. This most commonly occurs as the nerve exits the vertebral column to provide strength/motor function and sensation to the leg. The 5th lumbar (L5) nerve root supplies the area you describe and the pins and needles suggest the quality of pain that comes from nerve compression. With weeks duration now, I would consult my physician. Good wishes:)
