is it normal for a boil caused by an inflamed hair follicle to look like a bruise? this started after hot compress was applied and it softened.

See below: The bruise would indicate there was some bleeding into the skin at the site of the boil. This can occasionally happen. What's most important is to get adequate drainage of the pus in the boil without squeezing it.
