Dry socket: Dry socket refers to a condition where the blood clot is totally or partially lost in the socket after a tooth is removed. The blood clot is necessary for normal wound healing and when it is dislodged, the bone in the socket is exposed and this is extremely painful. Smoking is a strong irritant to wound healing and can cause disruption of healing in the socket and should be avoided.
