Spasm: This may be a muscular spasm in the throat causing some radiation to the esophagus which sits behind the sternum(breast bone). This cramp is analogous to the Charley horse occurring in other muscles. These throat or esophageal spasms are short lived and unless they occur frequently, are nuisances rather than anything serious. If symptoms occur repeatedly see your physician for advice.
