A member asked:

Is an emg usually ordered when symptoms of cervical radiculopathy are consistent with mri results and the results of a physical exam?

No, not often.: EMG/NCV study can be helpful in diagnosing cervical radiculopathy. However, in my Practice I have found these to be very rarely helpful. The clinical exam is much more helpful and predictive of good outcome from surgery. Insurance companies will many times require this test to be positive before they authorize surgery which means denials for many patients who could benefit from surgery.
