Easy.......and Hard.: There are fractured ankles and then there are fractured ankles. The grossly fractured ones are generally easy to recognize by eye, where as the more subdued ones will need an x-ray to confirm their presence. In most circumstances expect swelling, pain, bruising and weakness. If there is any doubt, see a doctor and they will be happy to confirm.

Broken ankle: Most of the time, an x-ray can tell. In some cases, as with stress fractures, MRI or bone scans are needed.
