YES...: Analysis of the urine can suggest infection but not confirm a UTI. Culture is best. Culture will not be positive if infection due to viruses or if inflammation is of a non infectious origin. Presence of WBCs do not always signal an infection. If your daughter has persistence of WBC especially if symptomatic I will be very glad to help you troubleshoot that. Take care!

Collection issues: Many obtain urine specimens at that age by having the kid pee in a cup with little preparation. X-ray studies show this often includes some urine that passes into the vagina and drags debris into the specimen. Kids may also have a few urinary WBC's during any fever. Teaching her to clean well and spread her labia to pee (like a boy) can stop the contamination.
