A member asked:

When do preemies get their first tooth? i have a 28-weeker who is now 5.5 months (2.5 months adjusted) and she seems to be showing signs of teething (drooling, irritability, chewing/sucking on everything in reach, and not sleeping as much).

Mgt: It is possible, but I would also recommend monitoring her breathing pattern which is still developing. Watch for any gasping, color changes or abnormal breathing sounds.

Perfectly normal: Some babies are born with at least 1 erupted tooth. Some don't get a tooth until 18 months. 6 months is a little early but well within normal limits. As soon as 1st tooth erupts, but no later than 1st b'day, take baby to pediatric dental specialist, a Pedodontist (for all the same reasons you see a Pediatrician for medical care) for exam, developmental analysis, oral hygiene instruction, etc.

Wide Variation: No set time for infants to start teething. It's nature's way of making us all a bit unique!
