See answer: Most recommendations suggest screening starting age 50. 75% of colon cancers are not familial or hereditary. Having a father with colon cancer increases your risk by at least 20%. HOWEVER YOUR ABSOLUTE RISK IS STILL LOW. You cannot be faulted for wanting a colonoscopy before age 50 but it's not absolutely necessary. *Focus should be on PREVENTION, not detection: **see comments below for specifics.
