A member asked:

My dad was diagnosed with stage 3 colon cancer at age 54. when should i get my first colonoscopy?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

At about 44 years: The general rule is to get a colonoscopy about 10 years before the age a relative developed colon cancer. You may wish to monitor occult blood in stool with a FIT test. It would be prudent to discuss these issues with your doctor. For good health - Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. Drink enough water daily, so that your urine is mostly colorless. Exercise at least 150 minutes/week and increase the intensity of exercise gradually. Do not use tobacco, alcohol, weed or street drugs in any form. Practice safe sex, if you have sex.
