See Dentist: Recurring lesions are not normal. It would take more than 400 characters to list all the possibilities, most benign, but some not so. Don't be foolish. Take what you call "ulcers" into your Dentist or an Oral Surgeon and take advantage of their years of training and experience. Self-diagnosis is at best dangerous.

Canker sore: can be very painful. Individual ulcers on the tongue typically last 1-2 weeks. Try to keep adequate oral hygiene as possible. If concerned, see your dentist.
