Go to ER: Black stool is often referred to as melena, a scientific term for blood after it has been digested in the G.I. tract. It is often a sign of ongoing internal bleeding. It is often soft and very foul smelling, but it is difficult to tell whether blood is present in a black stool without having a test performed. You should be seen ASAP. Don't delay. Good luck.
