Through nerves: Herpes simplex virus infection of some nerve cells does not reault in cell death. Viral genomes are maintained by the cell, called latency. For hsv1 this latency occurs primarily in the trigeminal ganglia. Viral reactivation usually spreads outward causing herpes labalis. Rarely reactivation results in spread centrally into the temporal lobes of the brain causing herpes encephalitis.
