Size, soft, how long: Lymph nodes in a 5 y/o are very common. In a overwhelming majority, they are a reaction to an infection, viral, or bacterial , and requires NO treatment. But the size, consistency, and rapidity at which they enlarge are important. If they are 1 inch n diameter or more, if it is rock hard, or if it is enlarging very rapidly ( in a matter of days), then he needs to be examined by a specialist.
