You will get better: Benzodiazepine taper, especially for someone on them long-term, takes a long time - think many months. Valium is good, and there's really no reason to change to a different benzodiazepine. However, an alternative can be to add-in a seizure medication - Depakote/Tegretol/Gabapentin. These meds hit the same GABA receptors that Benzos do and can allow for quicker taper off of Valium. Best Wishes

Frame of mind: Hi Terry, good advice here already. In addition, make sure you have adequate psychological support. Be confident - you can do this! Be patient - your body and brain needs time to adjust, and it takes time to develop alternative living skills. Congratulations for starting the process. You will feel better, both physically and emotionally, when you are off these medications. Take good care.
