A member asked:

How does a doctor determine whether a patient has more than 20% myeloblasts: is it done by examining spinal fluid or can a blood test easily det

Below: The myeloblast is a unipotent stem cell, which will differentiate into one of the effectors of the granulocyte series. The stimulation by G-CSF and other cytokines triggers maturation, differentiation, proliferation and cell survival. It is found in the bone marrow, not normally found in peripheral blood Under certain conditions it is found in the blood

Where?: This is of course the leukemia / myelodysplasia workup. Most often the burning question is whether there's 20% or more in the marrow. If they're in the blood, we already know. Percentage in spinal fluid -- you need spinal fluid. I'm glad you're interested in your workup and I trust you'll have a productive discussion with your physician. Best wishes.
