Begin with retinal : Exam so that your retinal specialist can locate any existing retinal breaks or tears and also lattice. Lattice degeneration is a common finding in many usually nearsighted patients. If there is a tear then have it lasered. Make sure that you see the eye specialist at whatever interval is recommended. Know the warning signs of retinal detachment (flashes, floaters, curtain, shadow).

See a Retina Doc: Some people are at higher rish than others to get a retinal detachment: family history, detachment in the other eye, eye injury, previous eye surgery, and moderate to severe near-sightedness, are a few. The best thing to do is to get examined by a retinal specialist and find out if you are in a high risk catagory. Sometimes laser can be used to reduced the risk of retinal detachment.
