How serious is retinal detachment and how are high myopians prone to get it?

Blinding: Vitreous detachment from the retina causes floaters ; traction on the retina causes retinal tears with flashes in vision. Patients with high myopia, family history or history in their other eye are more likely to develop tears and detachment, probably 10 times more likely than the general population. It is blinding if left untreated.

RD uncommon: A retinal detachment (rd) is a serious condition which usually requires surgery to repair. People with high myopia (more than six diopters) have a higher incidence of rd because they have thinner retinas which are more risk of a retinal break or tear. Howevere, the incidence of rd in high myopes is still low. If you are worried, have your retina examined by an ophthalmologist.
