A member asked:

I see gaps between my lower teeth (fixed retainer) after the dentist cleans it up. could this be a case of receding gums? if so, can it be healed?

Speak with DDS: Most likely the permanent retainer was covered in calculus and now you are feeling spacing when it was cleaned. It terms of long term-speak with your dentist and hygienist and speak with your orthodontist about having the permanent retainer, which is a plaque trap if not meticulously cleaned, removed.

It is normal: After the buildup of plaque and tartar is removed, you supposed to have a small gaps between the teeth. It is normal.

Black triangles: Plaque and especially tarter can damage your gums. Fixed lower retainer makes cleaning more challenging. Once gum tissue is lost it will not regenerate. To prevent further gum recession, and formation of unsightly black triangles, you must clean between the teeth below the retaining wire. Use a floss threaded and floss, an inter proximal brush, or a Water Pik DAILY.
