PEP works, low risk: Post exposure prophylaxis (PEP) is not a myth. It works. However, there are no data on exact effectiveness for various kinds of exposure or at different viral loads. With an HIV viral load of 40, transmission of the virus is unlikely even with a high risk exposure. If you also take PEP starting as soon as 2 hours, it is extremely unlikely you will be infected.
